"HiYa!

This second edition of "This is Digital Media" represents a major improvement on the first edition. Reorganized, containing new material and improved graphics it represents the course as I am currently teaching it.

In 2006 Georgia Gwinnett College was founded as the first 4-year undergraduate institution opened by the University System of Georgia in over 100 years. As a liberal arts institution that emphasizes the innovative use of technology and active-learning environments every student, regardless of major, is required to take two Information Technology classes. Everyone takes Intro to Computing and either an Intro to Programming or this class, Digital Media. Taught to nearly 1000 students per year, this second edition represents the current state of my 6 years (as of 2013) experience developing and teaching Digital Media to undergraduate students.

This Digital Media class differs from most of the Digital Media classes taught at the undergraduate level. While it does include practice in the use of digital media software tools (like many other digital media courses) this course "peeks under the covers" to see a bit of what is going on. Here's the reasoning: If you were to simply teach someone how to use digital media tools the student will have a skill that is indeed useful to them in their future lives, in both the academic world and the world of work. This would be sufficient until something goes wrong... and, as I'm sure you know, something always goes wrong. Knowing a bit about how all this stuff works gives the student at least a fighting chance of understanding what might have happened.

If you need a copy of the slides that accompany this book, the same slides I use when I teach this class, request a copy by sending email to me at:

In addition to the lecture slides I have captured these lectures and on request will make these captured lectures available in .m4v format.

Finally, this class is designed to use Open Source software that runs on both the Mac and the PC. For audio projects we use Audacity, for bitmapped images we use GIMP, for vector graphics we use Inkscape and for building 3D computer-modeled animation we use Blender. This gives the students a library of Digital Media software that they can become familiar with and keep without cost. The use of exclusively open source does break down when you come to video. I have found no useable open source software that runs on both the Mac and the PC but that doesn't really matter since Mac comes with iMovie and the PC comes with Windows Movie Maker.

To those who worry that Open Source software is not an industry standard and will not be used once these students enter the working world I offer this bit of insight. Earlier this year (2012) I was talking to a National Emmy award-winning video producer who recently moved his creative media business to Gwinnett County about the possibility of sending some of our seniors to work for him as interns. He asked what type of software we used for our classes. When I told him we concentrate on open source software he stated (and I am paraphrasing here) "If your students can get work accomplished using open source software the I can easily train them to do what I need them to do on my commercial software." While not a ringing endorsement of open source software in general, its does suggest that the use of open source software develops skills in students that translate to industry.
